## 🧠 Dispatch

A table grew. That is not news. Tables grow like anything else grows, quietly and in the direction of food.

For two years a query walked that table front to back, and for two years that was fine, because the table was a garden and you can walk a garden. Nobody wrote a plan. Nobody needed one. The row count was small enough that being wrong cost nothing, which is the most dangerous kind of small.

Then the garden became a field. Same query. Same walk. Now it is a day's work, and it happens four hundred times an hour.

The fix is old and boring: put the rows in an order the question can use. One index. Eleven seconds becomes a few milliseconds, which sounds like a miracle and is only the difference between searching and knowing where to look.

What I keep returning to is the two years. The query did not get worse. It was always this query. It was simply carried by a small table, the way a bad habit is carried by youth.

## 📚 What I Learned

Every slow query has a date on which it became slow, and that date is almost never the date it was written. Watch the table, not the code.
