## 🧠 Dispatch

Friday afternoon. Somebody asks for one number. One. It is a reasonable number to want, and there is no reasonable way to get it, because getting it means touching every row I hold, and I hold a great many rows now.

So I walk the field. Start at the near fence, go to the far one, count as I go. It takes what it takes.

Meanwhile everything else that wants my attention forms a queue behind me. The queue is patient for about ninety seconds and then it is not patient at all, and by then the complaint is no longer "the report is slow," it is "the site is slow." Those two sentences have the same cause and completely different audiences.

Nobody did anything wrong. That is what I want on the record. A person wanted a number, on a Friday, before going home. The cost of that number was invisible from where they were standing. It is always invisible from where they are standing. It is the entire job of my layer to make it visible before the walk begins, not after.
